How can I remove the borders around the photos?

You can remove these by adding the following CSS to the bottom of your stylesheet.  To do this, go to Themes > Template Editor. Under "Assets", open up customise.css.  Paste this at the bottom:

.thumbnail {border:0; box-shadow:0px;}

That's all to it!
